After School STEM and Design This program is not currently scheduled but can be offered upon request. Ages: 8-15 Cost: $35.00
This is the first event of a 6 week series of after school events that will enable students to explore a variety of topics in STEM and design such as robotics, engineering design, graphic design, programming and electronics. Each week must be registered for separately. Students come for two hours between 3 and 6pm to allow for different school day schedules and transportation. Students may stay longer than two hours at an additional cost of $10/hour, paid at the end of the series of classes. We follow the New Milford school calendar. There is no After School program on days of no school (e.g. Thanksgiving Day) or school weather cancellations. Read more details here.
Location: Education Without Walls, 64 Railroad St., New Milford, CT.
Topics may include robotics, coding with Scratch and other languages, engineering design challenges, graphic art and animation, computer fundamentals, electronics, the science of sound, solids-liquids-gases and phase changes, mathematics challenges, architectural LEGO projects, and others.
Open Studio and After School Topic 2: Tower Engineering This program is not currently scheduled but can be offered upon request. Ages: 8-15 Cost: $35.00
Students will learn about the tallest towers in the world, discuss different types of engineering fields and what it means to be an engineer. Students will design and build a tower using straws and tape aiming for the tallest structure they can create. As a group, we will look at each tower and talk about the design.
Other topics available for free time will include student personal projects, programming in Scratch and on various coding tutorial sites, robotics, Lego architecture sets and keyboarding skills, among others.
When registering, if students wish to use some or all of their time as Open Studio, they must indicate what they intend to work on and what, if any, resources they need provided such as equipment or expertise.
WHERE: 64 Railroad St. in New Milford, at Education Without Walls (EWW), a wonderful home-schooling organization and facility.
WHEN: Students attend for 2 hours on Thursday afternoons from 3-6 pm. Team members may arrive as early as 2:45 and do homework or other activities in the EWW common room while waiting to start activities.
Open Studio and After School Topic 3: Physics of Sound This program is not currently scheduled but can be offered upon request. Ages: 8-15 Cost: $35.00
Students will learn about the physics of sound, how it happens, how we hear it, the meaning of decibels, frequency and power, and the danger of hearing loss from headphones or environmental noise.
Other topics available for free time will include student personal projects, programming in Scratch and on various coding tutorial sites, robotics, Lego architecture sets and keyboarding skills, among others.

Rescheduled from November 15.
For this topic, we will talk about and see all phases of matter, watch as phase changes occur, experiment with different densities of solids, liquids and gases, and learn the correct meanings of important vocabulary of science.

Open Studio and After School Topic 5: FIRST Robotics Introduction This program is not currently scheduled but can be offered upon request. Ages: 8-15 Cost: $35.00
Students will learn all about the FIRST robotics organization and the four levels of robotics competitions or programs that are available. Students will see the FIRST LEGO League competition table, learn about the missions and point scoring and try their hand at programming a robot to complete some of the missions. This is a great way to decide if a student wants to join a team next year.

Open Studio and After School Topic 6: Drones or Graphic Design This program is not currently scheduled but can be offered upon request. Ages: 8-15 Cost: $35.00
We will have one or both of two topics this week: an introduction to drones and/or an introduction to graphic design and animation.
The drones topic will include learning how drones are made, what they can do, problems they can cause and how to operate them properly. Students will be able to practice flying an actual drone.
The graphic design topic will involve an introduction to Fire Alpaca, a great, free software for design and animation. The software is easily downloaded at home so students can continue their work after the class and/or continue to work with it in our after school program for their free time as Open Studio.
Other topics available for free time will include student personal projects, programming in Scratch and on various coding tutorial sites, robotics, Lego architecture sets and keyboarding skills, among others.
